“Crush the doubt.” That’s the mantra for Glenpool’s varsity cheer squad, reminding the team to trust their skills and strive for excellence. Flyer Claire Watts has spent six years perfecting her talent while leading teammates and inspiring younger cheerleaders. For her, that saying is a mindset that pushes the team past fear and hesitation, building confidence and resilience.
A dancer from a young age, Watts began cheering in seventh grade inspired by her older sister, Anna.
“I loved watching how much she enjoyed it and seeing her perform made me want to give it a try too,” Watts said.
She credits her sister with teaching her most of what she knows about cheerleading and said she wouldn’t be the athlete she is today without that guidance.
Watts said her coaches have played a tremendous role in her growth and leadership, citing their constant support and encouragement. She added that years of competitive dance, including performing with an all-star pom team at Elite Dance of Tulsa, helped shape her skills and confidence.
Being a senior has given Watts the chance to step into more of a leadership role.
“I try to set a good example for the underclassmen by encouraging them and showing them what it means to work hard and stay positive,” she said.
She motivates her teammates by maintaining a positive attitude and leading by example, whether giving her best effort at practice or showing confidence during performances. Watts has also grown as a leader through her roles in the National Honor Society and as student council president, positions that emphasize teamwork and service.
Watts’ favorite cheer moment came when the team took third place at the state competition, made even more special sharing it with her sister during Anna’s senior year. She has also been recognized on the team as MVP of the week for her effort, positivity and leadership.
“It really meant a lot to be recognized for all my hard work,” Watts noted.
After high school, Watts plans to attend college and continue performing with a college dance team. While cheer may not be a part of her future, the lessons always will be.
“It has taught me all about teamwork, leadership, and perseverance and it has truly shaped who I am today.”
