Glenpool High School’s Gemma Lingle brings energy to the sidelines as a varsity cheerleader and determination to the mat as a wrestler. Whether she is supporting the Warriors through cheer or competing in wrestling, Lingle values the people and habits that push her to improve.
“What I love most about my team and teammates is how close everyone is and how encouraging everyone is,” Lingle said. “Our wrestling programs positives is the hard work and determination everyone has.”
That team atmosphere has helped shape Lingle’s experience in two demanding activities. Wrestling, in particular, has challenged her beyond the physical side of competition.
“The most difficult aspect of wrestling to me is the mental part of the sport,” Lingle said.
Still, Lingle continues working to improve her skills and embrace the discipline required to compete. Her favorite move is a blast double leg, while she is also focused on developing another key technique.
“My favorite skills in wrestling is a blast double leg. I’m working on improving my single leg,” Lingle said.
Lingle said consistency has become one of the most important lessons she has learned through athletics. It is a quality she sees in teammates, including fellow wrestler Sa’nya, whose example has made an impression.
“The biggest lesson I learned last year was that being consistent and showing up everyday matters,” Lingle said. “My teammate Sa’nya has left an impression on me and shown me what it is like to be a leader, to be consistent, and to be a hard worker.”
Away from competition, Lingle draws inspiration from her mother.
“My mom inspires me because she is very hard working and never doubts me,” Lingle said.[1]
After high school, Lingle hopes to pursue a career caring for animals. “After I graduate, I would like to become a veterinarian,” Lingle said.
