A left-winger for Glenpool High School, Jonah Shabantu started his soccer career when he was just in kindergarten. Now an eleventh grader at GHS, Shabantu said he loves the game and loves being part of the Warrior family.

“Glenpool is a great place for student-athletes because the coaches and teachers are really supportive and will help you whenever you need help,” Shabantu said. “I love how my teammates always have my back no matter what.”

The junior said he’s made a lot of great memories on the pitch, but a game last season stands out amongst many he’s played at GHS.

“One of my favorite moments was scoring an absolute banger on Tahlequah my sophomore year,” said Shabantu.

Also a club player for the Tulsa Soccer Club ECNL 08, Shabantu said one of his strengths is in his speed, but he continues to work on all of his skills and eventually would like to play at the next level.

“My strength is probably my speed and I’ve improved my dribbling tremendously this year,” Shabantu said. “I’d like to play Division 1 college soccer. This summer I plan to train and get better so next year I can win state. I’m also going to Portugal this summer to visit my grandparents.”

Away from school you can usually find Shabantu at the Jenks track practicing or working at Home Depot.

Shabantu said he still finds inspiration in a family member no longer with him.
“I’d say my uncle who has sadly passed away. He used to always kick a soccer ball around with me when I was little and he would show up to my games and would always encourage me to become my best and would always compare me to Cristiano Ronaldo. And my dad who takes me to showcases and is always there for me.”
