Q&A with Glenpool’s Coen Johnson – Presented by BancFirst Glenpool

Coen Johnson

Glenpool High School

VYPE: Coen, what does the Glenpool XC team look this season?

Coen Johnson: I’d like to say our team is looking pretty decent this year! With new runners on our team who are getting better day by day, and previous runners who are getting much faster than their previous years!

VYPE: Do you have a favorite moment while competing in cross country?
CJ: My favorite running memory would have to be making it to AAU Junior Olympics for the first time in Greensboro NC and running against many talented and skilled runners.

VYPE: What about a favorite subject or teacher in school?
CJ: Yes, currently my favorite subject is English, and my favorite teacher would have to be Mr. Taylor, my English teacher. He always looks out for his students and loves to listen to others no matter what the story is.

VYPE: Best thing about being a student-athlete at GHS?
CJ: There is quite a lot of great things I could say about being a student-athlete at GHS. From the amazing coaching, to the understanding and dedicated teachers.

VYPE: Any particular place you like to run or compete?
CJ: I have quite a few places I love to run, but my favorite place to run would have to be the Turkey Mountain’s running trail, for a great competition, I’d say Holland Hall.

VYPE: Who on the team keeps everyone laughing and who is the most serious?
CJ: Our team’s funniest teammate would have to be Trey, always joking around and giving others energy, but makes sure to get in the right mental state when it’s time to compete. When we’re talking about the most serious, in my opinion that would be Keise, setting the bar high, with plenty of goals he strives to achieve.

VYPE: How do you prepare for an event?
CJ: I like to do some breathing exercises before racing to reduce any stress or nervousness, my favorite currently is the box breathing technique, so when I run, my mind is clear of everything.

VYPE: Best advice you’ve ever received?
CJ: “Failure is always better than being scared to try, failure is your step towards success.”

VYPE: Plans after high school?
CJ: After high school I’d like to continue my running career in college, and study to become a physical therapist.
