For Glenpool High School senior Konnor Mathews, football is about more than lining up in the trenches. As a tackle, long snapper and nose guard for the Warriors, Mathews embraces the responsibility of filling several important roles while bringing a determined mindset to every practice and game.
His first varsity start remains one of the defining moments of his high school career.
“My first varsity start is probably my most memorable moment. It was nerve racking but definitely very fun,” Mathews said.
That experience helped reinforce the lessons he has learned through football, particularly the importance of resilience. Glenpool’s program has a message that has stayed with Mathews when competition becomes difficult.
“I think football has taught me to no matter what happens to you don’t let it break you. At Glenpool we have a saying what breaks you and to push past that breaking point,” Mathews said.
Mathews also draws inspiration from his grandfather, whose guidance has shaped his outlook both on and off the field.
“My biggest inspiration is my grandpa because through it all he’s taught me to never give up and make the best of every situation and trust in the Lord,” Mathews said.
He said former teammates Mark Mata and Lane Jiles made a lasting impact through their leadership and work ethic. Mathews appreciated that they held teammates accountable and demanded consistent effort in practice.
“Former teammates who left an impression on me I would say either Mark Mata or Lane Jiles. They both are great leaders for our team and don’t let anyone take a rep off or slack off during practice,” Mathews said.
Away from football, Mathews enjoys Coach Straessle’s class because of the positive atmosphere it provides each day. He also values the reminder to make every day count.
“The best advice I’ve been given is to make the most of every day because tomorrow is never promised,” Mathews said.
Mathews gave special recognition to his mother for her steady support throughout his journey.
“I would like to give a shout out to my mom for being there for me anytime I needed her,” Mathews said.
