Glenpool High School’s Lydia Wells is quickly establishing herself as a key contributor to the Lady Warriors softball program, combining toughness behind the plate with a team-first mindset that reflects both her upbringing and her passion for the sport.
Wells, who will be a junior this fall, plays catcher a position she describes as one of the most physically and mentally demanding roles on the field. “I’m a catcher, and I think the hardest part is being willing to sacrifice your body for the team,” she said. “It’s a demanding position that requires toughness, but it’s also one of the reasons I love it.”
Her resilience comes from a strong personal influence. Wells credits her mother as her biggest inspiration. “She has shown me the importance of resilience and always reminds me that I can overcome challenges if I keep working hard,” Wells said. “Her dedication and her ability to never give up, no matter the situation, motivates me every day.”
That perseverance carries into every aspect of Wells’ athletic career. She said athletics have taught her how to push through adversity, whether it’s tough practices, mental challenges or setbacks. Those lessons, she added, extend beyond softball and into everyday life.
Wells also values the camaraderie within her team. “I love the team chemistry we have and the lighthearted energy we bring everywhere we go,” she said. She pointed to teammates Haven Artusi as one of the most vocal leaders and Avery Baker as the teammate who keeps spirits high.
Off the field, Wells enjoys mentoring younger players, something she finds especially rewarding. “It’s great to see them improve and develop confidence while finding joy in softball,” she said.
At the plate, Wells keeps her approach simple. “Once I’m in there, it’s all about trusting myself see ball, hit ball,” she said.
When she’s not on the field, Wells spends her time baking, swimming, attending church and being with family and friends. In the classroom, she enjoys English, citing her freshman teacher, Mr. Hunt, as a favorite.
